At first there was bar keel which was used extensively , but since there is no direct connection be keel and floor hence they slowly become obsolete and flat bar keel took its place.
Types of keel:-
1. Bar keel:- depth of bar is 3-6 times that of its width and is made in length from 10-20 mtr. Joined by vertical scarphs which have length 9 times that of width of keel.

2. Flat plate keel:- keel plate has width of 1-2 mtr. It must have full thickness for 3/5 length amidship but thickness reduces towards the end of the ship. The centre girder is attached to the keel and inner bottom plating by continuous weld and no scallops are permitted in connection.

3. Duct keel:- runs from fwd bulkhead of engine room to the collision bulkhead. It is a form of flat plate keel but with 2 centre girders. Transverse stiffening bar or brackets are normally provided on keel and inner bottom plating between the centre girders. Duct keel is normally provided as a tunnel for pipes from the tank.

Dear Sir,
I am in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary working on updating the Boat Crew Instructor Guide for members who want to become Boat Crew Qualified. The document now is around 430 pages long. When I started in the middle of November, it was 345 pages long so you can see that I have done a substantial amount of work recently. There are two pictures on your website that I would like to use – they are the Flat Plate Keel and Duct keel images. Do I have your permission to use the drawings? It would be greatly appreciated if I can use them because the task book that the Coast Guard updated includes information about different types of keels. I have provided my email address. Thank you for your help and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
