SURGING AND ITS CAUSES

TURBOCHARGER IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF THE MORDERN ENGINE AND HELPS IN CREATING MORE POWER AND INCREASING THE EFFICIENCY OF THE ENGINE. IT INCREASES THE MASS FLOW RATE OF AIR AND HENCE MORE FUEL CAN BE BURNED TO GIVE MORE POWER. AIR ENTERING THE COMPRESSOR BLADES THROUGH AIR FILTER AND INDUCER IS COMPRESSED  TO LEAVE WITH A PRESSURE AND VEOCITY AND THEN THROUGH DIFFUSER FOR FURTHER RISE IN PRESSURE BY CONVERTING KINETIC ENERGY TO PRESSURE ENERGY. THIS HIGH PRESSURE AIR ENTERS RECEIVER.

THE TURBOCHARGER ROTATES BY THE ENERGY OF THE EXHAUST GASES LEAVING THE SYSTEM. IF DUE TO ANY REASON THE SPEED OF THE TURBOCHARGER DROPS, THE COMPRESSOR SPEED WILL ALSO DROP LEADING TO DECREASE IN THE PRESSURE IN THE DIFFUSER. THIS WILL LEAD TO BREAKDOWN OF FLOW OF AIR AND AIR FROM THE DELIVERY SIDE OF THE DIFFUSER WILL RUSH TOWARDS THE DIFFUSER LEADING TO A HIGH PITCH VIBRATION WITH NOISE. THIS NOISE IS KNOWN AS SURGING.

CAUSES OF SURGING :        

  1. FUEL OIL SYSTEM :-
  • LOW PRESSURE OF SUPPLY AND CIRCULATING PUMP
  • AIR IN FUEL OIL
  • WATER IN FUEL OIL
  • LOW PREHEATING TEMPERATURE
  • DEFECTIVE SUCTION OR DELIVERY VALVE
  • STICKY FUEL PUMP PLUNGER OR FUEL VALVE NEEDLE
  • DAMAGED FUEL VALVE NOZZLE
  • DEFECTIVE FUEL OIL LINE RELIEF VALVE
  • FAULTY CAMSHAFT TIMING

2. EXHAUST SYSTEM :-

  • EXHAUST VALVE NOT OPENING CORRECTLY
  • BLOCKED PROTECTIVE GRATING BEFORE TURBOCHARGER
  • INCREASED BACK PRESSURE AFTER TURBOCHARGER
  • PRESSURE PULSATION AFTER TURBOCHARGER
  • DAMAGED COMPENSATOR BEFORE TURBOCHARGER

3. TURBOCHARGER :-

  • FOULER SILENSER, COMPRESSOR OR TURBINE
  • BEARING FAILURE

4. SCAVENGE AIR SYSTEM :-

  • FOULED AIR COOLER, WATER MISTCATCHER OR DUCT
  • STOPPED COOING WATER
  • COKE IN SCAVENGE PORT
  • TOO HIGH RECEIVER TEMPERATURE

5. MISCELLANEOUS :-

  • HUNTING GOVERNOR
  • TOO QUICH CHANGE IN LOAD
  • TOO RAPID RPM CHANGE
