Types of ships

1. Flush decked ship:- is the original type in which the upper deck is also the freeboard deck.

2. Three island ship:- is one in which machinery casing is raised to protect engine from sea. Hence hull is raised amidship to form a bridge. The poop is also raised to protect steering gear and forecastle to protect the crew.

3. Long bridge ship:- to give additional cargo space one of the well deck either forward or act was enclosed.

4. Shelter deck ship:- is the one in which the other well of the long bridge ship is also enclosed to give continuous superstructure and upper deck usually of lighter scatlings than the main deck. This is of 2 types:-

A) Open shelter deck ship in which the superstructure is not entirely protected from sea water entry. This type of ship cannot load to more depth as compared to ordinary ship of same depth.

B) Closed shelter deck ship is the one where superstructure is made watertight. It can load more than open shelter ship but not as much as full strength ship of same size.

5. Raised quarter ship:- is used in ship with shaft tunnels takes large part of aft holds that ship gets trim forward when loaded and hence to overcome it deck is raised to some part to protect from sea water to enter.
