O.M.D ALARM IS A SAFETY PROVIDED IN THE MAIN ENGINE TO AVOID CRANKCASE EXPLOSION. IT HAS A DELAY OF 6 SECONDS BEFORE IT SLOWDOWN THE MAIN ENGINE TO 40% OF MCR.
WHEN O.M.D ALARM SOUND THEN FIRST WE HAVE TO CHECK THAT WHETHER THE ALARM IS FAULTY OR NOT. O.M.D ALARM IS NORMALLY PROVIDED IN ECR ONLY. HENCE FIRST WE HAVE TO CHECK FROM WHICH UNIT THE ALARM COMES. THEN RESET THE ALARM. THE O.M.D ALARM SLOW DOWN THE ENGINE HENCE IF SLOW DOWN HAPPENS BEFORE YOU CAN RESET THE ALARM THEN FIRST THE FUEL LEVER SHOULD BE PUT TO SLOW DOWN POSITION.CHECK IF AGAIN THE ALARM COMES FROM THE SAME UNIT OR NOT. IF YES THEN FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING STEPS :-
- REDUCE THE SPEED IF AUTOMATIC REDUCTION OF SPEED DOES NOT HAPPEN.
- CONTACT THE BRIDGE TO GET PERMISSION TO SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE.
- WHEN ENGINE STOP ORDER IS GIVEN THEN SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE.
- SWITCH OFF THE BLOWER AND ENGINE ROOM VENTILATION.
- OPEN THE SKYLIGHT.
- LEAVE THE ENGINE ROOM
- LOCK THE CASING DOOR AND KEEP AWAY FROM IT.
- PREPARE FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT.
- DO NOT OPEN THE CRANKCASE DOOR 20 MINUTES AFTER STOPPAGE
- STOP THE CIRCULATING OIL PUMP.
- OPEN THE DOORS AND CHECK THE HOT SPOT INSIDE THE CRANKCASE.
- DO PROPER CRANKCASE INSPECTION TO CHECK ANY REASON FOR HOT SPOT.
- IF EVERYTHING IS OK THEN START THE CIRCULATING OIL PUMP. TURN THE ENGINE BY TURNING GEAR TO CHECK OIL FLOW FROM BEARINGS AND CHAIN DRIVE NOZZLES.
- CLOSE THE CRANKCASE DOORS.
- START THE ENGINE AND SLOWLY RAISE THE RPM AND KEEP CHECK ON THE O.M.D ALARM AND FEEL THE CRANKCASE FOR INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE.
