OIL CONTAMINATION IN BOILER IS FROM THE STEAM RETURN LINE FROM ANY F.O HEATER OR FROM ANY F.O TANKS. OIL CONTAMINATION IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND HAVE TO BE DEALT FAST. OIL CONTAMINATION WHEN JUST VISIBLE IN GAUGE GLASS AND BOILER IS IN OPERATION FOR DISCHARGING OF CARGO THEN FOLLOWING STEPS SHOULD BE TAKEN.
- DONOT SHUT THE FIRE OFF -CONTINUE TO STEAM THE BOILER WHILE IMMEDIATELY STARTING TO TRACE THE SOURCE OF THE LEAKAGE. ONCE THE SOURCE IS IDENTIFIED, THAT LINE IS ISOLATED AND HOT WELL OIL IS SCUMED.
- INJECT EITHER MgSO4 AT ABOUT 100g/tonnes FOR COAGULATION OF OIL OR SODIUM PHOSPHATE TO INCREASE ALKALINITY AND CAUSE COAGULATION AND FLOACULATION OF OIL.
- AFTER 24 HOURS, SURFACE SCUM CAN BE STARTRD AND A SERIES OF BOILER WATER SAMPLE TAKEN TO DETERMINE CHEMICAL LEVELS WHICH MAY THEN BE ADJUSTED BACK TO RECOMMENDED LEVEL.
- CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE BOILER CONDITION AS THE FEED SYATEM IS FLUSHED AND CLEANED OF OIL.
- NO BLOWDOWN TO BE CARRIED OUT.
- IF GAUGE GLASS SHOW HEAVY OIL CONTAMINATION, THEN BOILER IS TAKEN OFF IMMEDIATELY AND ON NO ACCOUNT OIL WATER INTERFACE SHOULD NOT GO DOWN OF GAUGE GLASS
- THE BOILER MUST BE ALLOWED TO COOL NSTURALLY AND ONCE DEPRESSURIZED THE TOP MANHOLE DOOR IS OPENED AND REMOVED.
- USE PORTABLE PUMO TO REMOVE SURFACE OIL.
- AFTER BULK OIL IS DISCHARGED USE OIL DISPERDANT.
- THEN CARRY OUT BOIL OUT.
