SHAFT ALIGNMENT- “FAIR CURVE ALIGNMENT METHOD”

  1. ALL BEARINGS ARE ALIGNED IN STRAIGHT LINE AND LOAD IS DETERMINED ON EACH BEARING.
  2. COMPUTER PROGRAM THEN SIMULATES RAISING OF EACH BEARING THROUGH A RANGE AND CALCULATE FOR EACH SMALL CHANGE, THE INCREASE OF IT’S OWN LOAD AND ALTERATION IN LOAD ON THE BEARING.
  3. THEN LOWERING OF EACH BEARING IN TURN AND CALCULATING RESULTANT LOAD CHANGE ON BEARING AND OTHER BEARING.
  4. INFLUENCE NUMBER :- IN TERM OF LOAD CHANGE FOR EACH HEIGHT VARIATION, ARE CALCULATED BY THIS INCREASE FOR ALL BEARING.                              INFLUENCE NUMBER= CHANGE IN LOAD/ CHANGE IN VERTICAL MOVEMENT FOR EACH BEARING AND ALSO GIVE AN EFFECT OF RAISING ONE BEARING ON OTHER BEARING.                                                                                                        INFLUENCE NUMBER
  5. HYDRAULIC JACK IS PLACED ON EACH SIDE OF THE BEARING TO LIFT THE SHAFT JUST CLEAR. A DIAL GAUGE FIXED TO BEARING INDICATE LIFT. HYDRAULIC PRESSURE EXERTED BY JACK INDICATE LIFT. HYDRAULIC PRESSURE EXERTED BY JACK INDICATE LOAD ON BEARING.
  6. HYDRAULIC PRESSURE IS INCREASED AND CAUSES LIFT OF SHAFT.
  7. IF JACKING IS DONE TOO FAR, THEN ADJACENT BEARING GRADUALLY BECOMES UNLOADED AND PLOT IS AFFECTED. HENCE DIAL GAUGE IS FIXED ON ADJACENT BEARING TO ENSURE THAT LIFT IS LIMITED TO BEARING BEING CHECKED.
  8. THE INTERPOLATION OF JACKING UP AND DOWN GIVES ZERO LIFT LOAD ON BEARING AND USING THE DATA STERN FRAME IS BORED OUT AND SHAFT SYSTEM IS INSTALLED WITH TAIL SHAFT  AS DATUM.
  9. FINAL PROCESS IS SITTING THE ENGINE BEDPLATE.
  10. DURING INSTALLATION OF SHAFT AND ENGINE , THE SHAFT SYSTEM IS SUPPORTED ON SUPPORTS AND COUPLINGS ARE SET WITH GAPS AND OFFSETS WHICH ARE CALCULATED TO GIVE REQUIRED FAIR CURVE WHEN THE COUPLINGS ARE ALIGNED BY INSERTION OF FEELERS BETWEEN COUPLING TO CORRECT THE ALIGNMENT.
  11. AFTER ENGINE IS FINALLY CHOCKED AND BOLTED, SHAFT BEARING IS POSITIONED AND COUPLING BOUGHT IN LINE AND BOLTS FITTED AFTER ALIGNING WITH FEELERS.
  12. FINAL LINE OF SHAFTING IS SMOOTH CURVE REQUIRED FOR OPTIMUM BEARING LOAD WHEN SHIP IS IN SERVICE.
