IN A FULLY AND SEMI BUILD UP CRANKSHAFT THE JOURNAL AND CRANK-WEB AND SHRINK FIT TO ONE ANOTHER. AFTER CRANKSHAFT IS FULLY BUILD UP, A SMALL RECTANGULAR FLAT SURFACE IS CREATED HALF IN WEB AND HALF IN JOURNAL. A LIGHT CHISEL-CUT MARK IN A RADIAL LINE IS THEN MADE WITH A SHARP FLAT CHISEL SUCH THAT HALF OF A CUT IS IN JOURNAL AND HALF IS ON WEB. IF THERE IS A SLIP THEN THESE MARKS WILL NOT COINCIDE.
IN CASE OF FULL FORGED CRANKSHAFT, THIS MARK IS BETWEEN THE CRANKSHAFT AND THE FLYWHEEL.
DURING EVERY CRANKCASE INSPECTION THIS MARK SHOULD BE CHECKED.
CAUSE OF SLIPPAGE :-
- WHEN ENGINE IS SUDDENLY STALLED WHILE RUNNING WHEN PROPELLER GETTING JAMMED WHILE RUNNING AGROUND.
- ANY MOVING PART GETTING JAM DUE TO FAILURE OF BEARING ETC.
- RUNNING ENGINE WHEN CYLINDER IS FULL OF WATER.
