HOW TO TAKE AUXILIARY ENGINE LUBE OIL SAMPLE FOR SHORE LANDING

LUBE OIL SAMPLES ARE SENT FOR SHORE TESTING TO FIND OUT THE CONDITION OF LUBE OIL. NORMALLY THE FREQUENCY OF THIS TEST IS EVERY 3 MONTHS BUT IT DEPEND ON THE CHIEF ENGINEER OFFICER ON BOARD WHETHER HE WANTS TO SEND IT BEFORE ALSO IF HE SUSPECTS THAT LUBE OIL MAY BE CONTAMINATED.

                                      PROPER SAMPLING IS A MUST FOR GETTING AN ACCURATE RESULT FROM THE ANALYSIS. TO TAKE SAMPLE :-

  1. LOCATE THE SAMPLING POINT FOR TAKING LUBE OIL, IN NEW ENGINES SEPARATE SAMPLING POINT IS GIVEN WHILE IN OLDER ENGINES SAMPLES WERE TAKEN FROM LUBE OIL FILTER VENT COCK.
  2. IF THE ENGINE IS RUNNING THEN OPEN THE SAMPLE COCK AND LET THE OIL DRAIN FOR 2 MINUTES, BUT IF ENGINE IS STOPPED START THE ENGINE AND LET IT RUN FOR ABOUT 10-15 MINUTES AND THEN OPEN THE SAMPLE COCK AND LET THE OIL DRAIN.
  3. TAKE THE SAMPLE IN THE SAMPLING BOTTLE.
  4. DO NOT SHUT THE BOTTLE, LET THE OIL COOL DOWN.
  5. ONCE THE SAMPLE IS TAKEN, IT SHOULD BE MARKED WITH WHICH GENERATOR IT IS TAKEN.
  6. IN THE FORM THE RUNNING HOURS OF OIL, RUNNING HOURS OF ENGINE, GRADE OF OIL, NAME OF SHIP, IMO NUMBER OF SHIP ETC. SHOULD BE WRITTEN.
