SOX CONTROL CAN BE DONE BY 2 METHODS :-
- BY REDUCTION IN SULPHUR CONTENT IN HFO DURING REFINING STAGE.
- EXHAUST GAS SCRUBBING :- THIS METHOD CLAIMS THAT SOX REMOVAL EFFICIENCY IS 97% WHICH ENABLES THE USE OF 3.5% SULPHUR IN HFO AND COMPLY WITH THE EFFECT OF 0.1% SULPHUR IN HFO LIMIT AT ANY ENGINE POWER. IN THIS FRESH WATER IS MIXED WITH NAOH IN SCRUBBING UNIT. THE ALKALINE WATER WHICH IS SPRAYED INTO THE EXHAUST GAS WITH THE PURPOSE TO CHEMICALLY BIND THE SOX INTO THE SOLUTION AND THUS FREE THE EXHAUST GAS FROM SOX. THE ABILITY OF CIRCULATED WATER TO ABSORB SOX DEPENDS ON THE STRENGTH OF CAUSTIC ALKALINITY OF WATER. AFTER THE GAS IS WASHED A CONDENSATE TRAP REMOVES WATER DROPLETS FROM THE GAS FLOW. THE EXHAUST GAS LEAVING THE SCRUBBER AND WATER CATCHER UNIT WILL HAVE A HIGH HUMIDITY. THE WATER MAYBE RECIRCULATED FROM A CLOSED CIRCUIT. THE PARTICULATE ELEMENTS WILL BE CAUGHT IN THE SCRUBBER. ONLY CLEAN AND TREATED WATER IS DISCHARGED AND PARTICULATE MATER ARE COLLECTED AS SLUDGE FOR DISPOSAL ASHORE.
