BREAKING-IN AND RUNNING-IN OF M/E

BREAKING-IN PERIOD:-

THE RUNNING IN OF THE NEW LINER AND PISTON RINGS  IS CARRIED OUT DURING INITIAL RUNNING IN PERIOD, WHICH IS CALLED BREAKING-IN PERIOD AND DURING SUBSEQUENT SERVICE PERIOD IN WHICH LOAD IS UNRESTRICTED BUT WHERE EXTRA LUBRICATION IS STILL NEEDED. 

                  DURING BREAKING-IN I.E THE VERY FIRST LOADING UPTO MCR, EXCESSIVE LUBRICATION IS RECOMMENDED IN ORDER TO FLUSH AWAY ANY WEAR PARTICLE GENERATED. 200% OF BASIC SETTING OF LUBE OIL IS MAINTAINED DURING THIS PERIOD.

TIME DURATION FOR BREAKING-IN:-

  1.  IF ALU-COATED RINGS :- 5 HOURS DURATION
  2.  IF HARD COATED RINGS :-  15 HOURS DURATION

RUNNING IN PERIOD:-

AFTER BREAKING-IN PERIOD, WHERE AMPLE OIL HAS APPLIED, LOAD REDUCTION IS LIFTED. TO ENSURE OPTIMAL OIL FILM BUILD UP BETWEEN RINGS AND LINER , EXTRA OIL IS APPLIED BUT TO BE LIMITED FOR SOMETIME TO PROTECT COMBUSTION CHAMBER FROM HARD DEPOSIT. THIS PERIOD SHOULD BE LIMITED DURING WHICH RINGS AND LINER SURFACE ARE FORMING THEIR FINAL OPERATIONAL SURFACE,

SCAVENGE INSPECTION TO BE CARRIED OUT DURING ENTIRE RUNNING-IN PERIOD.

150% FEED RATE OF L.O FOR 1ST 250 HOURS AND AFTER SATISFACTORY SCAVENGE INSPECTION, FEED RATE TO BE REDUCED TO 125% FOR NEXT 250 HOURS AND AGAIN SCAVENGE INSPECTION IS CARRIED OUT AND THEN IF EVERYTHING IS OK THEN FEED RATE IS SET TO BASIC SETTING.
