THE AIM OF BEARING WEAR MONITORING SYSTEM IS TO DETECT A BEARING DAMAGE BEFORE THE LINING (TIN-ALUMINIUM) IS WORN AWAY BY LINING SCUFFING, WIPING, ABRASION WEAR, MELTING OUT OR EXTENSIVE FATIGUE OF THE LINING AND STEEL TO STEEL CONTACT OCCUR. ITS INTEND IS TO PREVENT CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGE OF THE CRANKSHAFT AND BEDPLATE IN CASE OF SEVERE BEARING DAMAGE.
THE PRINCIPLE OF BWM SYSTEM IS TO MEASURE THE VERTICAL POSITION OF THE CROSSHEAD IN THE BOTTOM DEAD CENTRE. THE BWM SYSTEM MONITORS ALL THREE PRINCIPAL CRANK-TRAIN BEARINGS USING TWO PROXIMITY SENSORS PER CYLINDER UNIT AND IS PLACED INSIDE THE FRAME BOX.
TARGETING THE GUIDE SHOW BOTTOM END CONTINUOUSLY, THE SENSOR MEASURES THE DISTANCE TO THE CROSSHEAD IN BDC. SIGNALS ARE COMPUTED AND DIGITALLY PRESENTED TO COMPUTER HARDWARE FROM WHICH A USEABLE AND EASILY INTERPRETABLE INTERFACE IS PRESENTED TO THE USER.
IN CASE OF WEAR IN CROSSHEAD AND CRANKPIN BEARING THIS VERTICAL POSITION WILL REFLECT THE WEAR. THE SYSTEM DELIVERS ALARM AND SLOW DOWN THE ENGINE IS ABNORMAL WEAR HAPPENS.
